Tailgating Foods You Will Love - 5 Tailgating Food Ideas

By Kelli E. Stevens

Down, set, hike! It's time to get ready for football season. That means breaking out the grill for those tailgating foods you will love. That can also mean you may have to break out those bigger jeans that hide in the back of your closet. The good news is you can enjoy those tailgating foods you love without having to get out those other jeans. I have taken some tailgating foods you will love and am giving you my tailgating foods ideas to make them a tad bit healthier.

Chili
• For your meat you want to choose a lean meat with no more than 8 grams of fat per serving.
• For your sauce, try a homemade chili sauce by simply using a can of tomato sauce, a chili powder, a little bit of Mrs. Dash Southwest Chipotle Seasoning (to eliminate some of the chili powder which reduces the amount of sodium), onion, and green peppers.
• Cook all day in a Crock Pot to enhance the flavor!

BBQ
• To make a lean BBQ, try using a Pork Tenderloin, this is the leanest cut of pork. Cooked in a Crock Pot all day helps it to just fall apart like a shredded pork.
• To ensure you know just what's in you BBQ, try making your own BBQ sauce. You can find recipes on-line or in cookbooks.

Skewers
• These are great tailgating food ideas because they are easy to eat and great for portion control.
• Try loading your skewer down with grilled veggies like onions, peppers, zucchini, squash, eggplant, etc.
• You could also do a meat and veggies skewer for added protein, which will help keep you going for the big game, by alternating grilled chicken or sirloin steak (the leanest cut of steak) and veggies.

Quesadillas
• For a fun and festive tailgating food everyone will love, use whole wheat or low-carb tortillas (like Mission Carb Smart Tortillas).
• Load them up with lots of grilled veggies and add in a little 2% cheese, grilled chicken, or sirloin steak if desired.
• Try to go heavier on the veggies than you do the cheese, chicken, or sirloin steak.
• Once you've filled and folded the quesadillas, cut them into small triangles to help you and your guests control portion sizes.

Baked Beans
• Simply take a bag of dry navy beans (soaked for a day if desired) and cook them until they are just tender.
• Once they are tender, drain the excess water and add in a homemade BBQ sauce (like the one you made for your BBQ). Let the beans simmer in the sauce. The longer they simmer together, the better they will taste!

It's that simple. Make a few trades, cut down on the size of your portions, and you can eat the tailgating foods you love without having to sacrifice your health or your skinny jeans!
