Wood Stoves Cast Iron Verses Steel

By David W Miller Wood burning stoves the comparison between steel and cast iron. Steel stoves heat up quick and start giving off heat right away. When the fire in the steel stove cools down so does the stove. A cast iron wood stove can take a couple hours to heat up, but when the fire dies down the cast iron will radiate out heat for hours. When comparable sized stoves are heated and operating both generate comparable heat into your home. What we will look at is the time it takes a wood stove to heat up and the time it takes to cool down. If you plan to purchase a wood stove and burn it 24-7 late fall till early spring either stove will heat the same. Where the heat up and cool down times play into the comparison is the home owner who burns a wood stove just a few times a week and wants to heat up a cold home quickly. Many people have cabins or cottages that the sole source of heat is a wood stove. When entering a cold cabin in the dead of winter you want heat right away...

How to Clean Your Pellet Stove

Most of the time wood pellet stoves will run better and more efficient when they are clean. The air inside can move around better and this will allow the appropriate combustion in the firebox. You can clean your pellet stove yourself and it will not take much time or work at all. You will have to have a few simple tools in order to get a better clean and have an easier time as well. A few things that you will need to clean your pellet stove are a paintbrush, paper towels, cloths, shop vac and the scraping rod that usually comes along with your stove. When you place a new bag of pellets into the hopper of the stove, it is a good idea to clean the heat exchanger. When you are cleaning this it will allow the heat to move from the firebox to your area a lot easier. It is best to use a good quality pellet to avoid cleaning more often. When you shut your pellet stove off, you can then use the paintbrush to clean the dust that the stove produces. You can use any other type of dus...

Simply fill with pellets switch on and set your thermostat and the stove will burn for hours or days at a constant regulated temperature with no intervention from you. An impo...

Pellet Stoves are Now the Greenest and Cheapest Heating Alternative

By S.A. Smith FUEL EFFICIENT Wood pellet stoves are a clean burning and efficient source of heat energy. Many wood pellet stoves on the market have been rated to have burning efficiencies higher that 85% and have no issues meeting stringent local and federal air quality standards. Compared to wood stoves that have substantial soot and ash buildup after one use, pellet stoves can run for weeks at a time and still not produce as much ash as one days use with a woodstove. ECO-FRIENDLY The wood pellets that fuel these stoves are made from recycled sawdust that would otherwise be disposed of in landfills or incinerated in waste burners typically found at sawmills. Wood is also a natural renewable resource and by selecting wood pellets as a fuel source you are helping to recycle forestry related waste byproducts. CONSISTENT HEAT SOURCE Pellet stoves deliver the wood pellet fuel into the stoves combustible chamber on a regular and consistent basis. What this means is that you h...

The Benefits of Wood-Pellet Stoves

By Peter Emerson Wood-pellet stoves were invented in the 1980's and have gained in popularity in the last few years. These are small electric stoves that burn small pieces of recycled sawdust that are compressed into pellets. There are a number of advantages to using wood-pellet stoves. They are extremely efficient, produce very little waste, and use inexpensive fuel. Wood-pellet stoves are fueled by tightly compressed pieces of sawdust. They have complicated machinery that adds new pellets to the fire when more fuel is needed. The user merely has to add the pellets to the hopper, and the mechanical auger moves pellets to the fire as needed. Wood-pellet stoves have average efficiency ratings of 80- to 85-percent. They heat more efficiently than bigger and more expensive gas heaters. These stoves have negative pressure systems that propel the hot air they produced outward, making the heat go farther than it would naturally. The pellets are burned so completely that th...

Take into account the size of your home, its floor plan (is it open or divided?) and the existing heating system. A rule of thumb for sizing a wood or pellet stove is 30 Btus per square foot. With the advances in technology of the past few years, stoves are now a method of supplying heat reliably. There are however some things that need to be considered, such as whether the stove is for heating and hot water, or just for heat, and whether it is for a room or a whole house. There is the question of how much work you are prepared to do to keep the stove working, the safety aspect to be considered, and the reliability of the stove fuel supply. This article will look at these points in turn and give some basic considerations that need to be borne in mind when looking to purchase a stove. The work the stove will be expected to do is a critical point, of course, and the size needs to be considered depending on how much heat is needed. If the stove is needed just for heating one room, then a small pellet stove will easily suffice. Or if you want t...

Wood Stove Basics

With the rising cost of fuel, we are searching for a less expensive way to heat our homes. Using wood for fuel could be your best answer. It is relatively inexpensive, can replace a major portion of your heating bill and is a renewable resource. We purchased a house in the spring of 2005 that had a wood burning stove. I was not sure what brand it was, but with a little research in the internet, I discovered it was an 'Earth Stove'. The only other wood burning stove we had owned was called a Ben Franklin stove. It was not very efficient allowing most of the heat to go up the chimney plus it did not seal completely allowing sparks to escape, an extreme fire hazard. We could not leave it unattended for fear of fire. After our experience with the Ben Franklin, I had some reservations about using the Earth Stove. When the first cold weather arrived, my reservations were resolved. It heated the house beautifully. The previous owners had left a small supply of wood which I...
