Choosing Kitchen Cabinet Pulls: The Most Common Mistakes

by Ernest Jarquio

Buying kitchen cabinet pulls seems like an easy task. You just go to the store or spend some time at your computer, and voila, you have some hardware. However, there are a few mistakes people make when selecting and purchasing these items.

One mistake is in thinking that adding new handles will change the whole look of your cooking area. That may be unrealistic. While hardware can add a lot of dazzle, it does not make up for a shabby-looking kitchen. If your cabinets have dingy or flaking paint, you need to refinish them along with putting on new knobs. That way, you provide a fresh clean finish for your drawer handles to go onto.

Consider Overall Style of the Kitchen

Another mistake is trying to go with a different style by changing this one item alone. If you have a country kitchen, it will remain an open casual room. Even if you put modern style knobs on the cabinets, you will not succeed in turning it into a contemporary style kitchen. To accomplish that, you will probably need to change light fixtures. Shiny new appliances will help with the change. Even different cabinet styles might make a difference. The overall style of the area will shine through no matter what kinds of handles you use.

If you are buying new storage furniture, you might make the mistake of disregarding the handles. After all, most new cabinets come with them already. You do not have to buy them if you are satisfied with the ones that come with your purchase. However, you may have some ideas of your own if you think about it. You might like something that reflects your personality or the overall theme of the kitchen.

You might want to buy drawer knobs after you have lived for awhile with those that were supplied with the cabinets. You may realize that you have different tastes after all. You might face another problem, though. You might be at the point where you have used up your entire remodeling budget before you realized you wanted a different style.

If you want to avoid this mistake, look at any new furniture as you buy them, and figure out immediately whether you need different pulls or not. Then you can work new knobs into your remodeling budget if you want to before the money is all gone.

Wear and Tear of Kitchen Cabinet Pulls

It is a mistake to buy handles without taking into consideration who will be using them. If you are always careful with your things, you might be safe in buying delicate knobs like hand-blown glass or porcelain ones. However, if you have children or teenagers in the house, you might do best to stick with some type of metal handles. Keep in mind that certain adults are even more careless than children. Only you know who will be using your drawers.

Do not make these mistakes when you buy these items for your cabinets. You may regret it, and you will surely end up having to buy a whole new different set to fix the situation. You can make the right decisions right up front if you just give it a little thought.
