How to Store More in a Small Kitchen

By Frances Leyland

Lack of storage space is a common problem in small kitchens. But there are things you can do and items you can purchase that will buy you some extra room. Here are some small kitchen ideas that might just help.

  1. Wall racks If you have some wall going spare, putting up a wall rack or a pegboard with hooks creates another place to store pots and pans.
  2. Hang things from the ceiling Similar idea: if the walls are already crammed full, pots and pans can hang from ceiling racks.
  3. Use all of corners Make the most of corners inside cupboards with carousel units. Many kitchen manufacturers make these circular rotating units that fit inside kitchen cupboards. They utilize the dead areas at the back of corner cupboards and allow every last bit of corner space to be used.
  4. Taller units Taller base units mean more storage space. Depends on your kitchen manufacturer, but many do now make higher kitchen units.
  5. Shelves on doors Fit shelves on the inside of kitchen cupboard doors. Depends on how full your cupboards are. But as long as they aren't choc-a-bloc, there should be room for some slim shelves to create more storage space for smaller items.
  6. Multi functional units There must be a proper name for these. I'm talking about the units that can fit knives and jars and small kitchen items and fix to the wall. Not merely space savers, multi functional units are also a great convenience: keeping all those little useful items, so common in the kitchen, all in one place and close to hand
  7. Stackable containers An easy way to make the most of worktop space.
