Kitchen Wall Clocks

By Joey Pebble

Aside from the accessories and utensils directly related to preparing, and or enjoying food, the wall clock may be the most important piece that you find in a kitchen. Since the purpose of the kitchen is very directly food related, you don't find a lot of unrelated items in the space. However a wall clock is a piece which can be both decorative and functional, and so it is often included in this space anyways.

Decorative Considerations

Wall clocks are hung up high on a wall, and as such are very visible, and tend to dominate the decorative tone of the room.

Wall clocks are available in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and patterns and you can even get custom printed wall clocks to hang in your kitchen.

There are also wall clocks available in materials that will match the appliances in your kitchen, such a stainless steal, or brushed copper.

Digital wall clocks are sometimes easier to use, but analog clocks are the classic look for this space. You can decide based on the ambiance you are trying to create.

The most common colors used in kitchen accessories are warm earth tones including browns, reds, and amber colors. Steal, stone, and brick are some common material colors.

Durability Considerations

Kitchens tend to get very hot. Do not purchase a wall clock for this space which is delicate, or which can warp, distort, or change under high heat pressures.

Kitchens are also messy. Make sure that your clock is made from something which is easy to clean such as slate, stainless steal, or glass. You should also be aware as to whether acidic foods such as pasta sauces or juices will cause chemical stains in the clock.

Functional Considerations

Wall clocks are hung in kitchens because they are useful. They help you set the tempo of your work, and keep track of how long things have been cooking.

You should purchase a clock which is large enough to easily glance at and get the time.

Some wall clocks have alarms, but only purchase these if you plan on hanging the piece somewhere where it will be easy to reach, and turn off.

A wall clock can be a wonderful addition to your kitchen, which can provide both useful function, and decorative attraction. Sitting high on the wall, it can cast your choice of effective ambiance over the space. It can also be used with smaller backup alarm clocks or egg timers, which will work in conjunction to give you a more precise measure of several different timelines.
