A Rant About Microwave Oven Safety

By Ross Wharton

Microwave ovens have taken bad press for many years, but when you try to find out why everything seems to link to one major report done in the late 1980's by a Swiss scientist, called Hans Hertel and the Russians' who banned microwave ovens for many years having done studies on microwaves in the 1930s, long before microwave ovens were invented.

Hans Hertel a food scientist spent two months locked in a hotel with seven colleagues testing microwave foods and taking and testing blood samples from those people and claiming that there were changes in their blood which showed similar signs to the pathological changes which occur at the start of cancer.

Hertel never claimed at any point that microwave ovens cause cancer and his studies were never replicated by any of his peers or published in any medical journal. It seems strange to me that in a world where health has become a priority with smoking bans across Europe and extensive aids programs being conducted through out Africa, that nobody in the developed nations of the World has conducted further tests to ascertain whether there are any facts to back up Hertel's claims or if they are complete rubbish. As what he studied and he measured the results has never been divulged it would be impossible to reproduce the tests and get any measurements.

Some theorists have suggested that the large technology corporations have deliberately stopped any scientific testing of microwave cookery. These are the same corporations that billions from TVs, Stereo systems and more recently Ipods and many other electrical products. Companies, who if microwave ovens were banned would not go out of business. If it was the case that large corporations were trying to stop testing on there products or development of new products the oil companys' would have stopped nuclear power and bi fuels before they even got off the drawing board.

There are millions of pages on the web claiming how bad microwave ovens are with absolutely no substantiated proof that they do any damage at all. Being a proud member of the free western world and respecting the rights of every individual to have their say I feel that a study that was done nearly twenty years ago, with no substantiated evidence is not only out dated but really should be put to bed. The other thing is that if these deluded individuals wish to keep putting the use of microwave ovens down as dangerous they need to come up with some evidence to support their claims or just shut up and let the rest of us normal people get on with our lives.
